Setting the Tone

Created for Twitch streamer, Izzaezel | Original music by ~internet ghost~https://internetghost.bandcamp.com/

Twitch streamer Izzaezel approached with this project and a clear goal: to create a memorable, atmospheric intro that would set the tone for their recurring “Fear Friday” streams. These streams had already begun to build a small but dedicated following, and the intent was to elevate the experience; transforming it from simply “watching a stream” into something that felt more like stepping into an event.

From a creative and strategic standpoint, the opportunity wasn’t just to make something visually interesting, it was to create anticipation. For smaller streamers especially, the first few moments of a broadcast are critical. That window determines whether a casual viewer stays, engages, or clicks away. With that in mind, the intro was designed to function as both a mood-setter and a retention tool.

In collaboration with music creator ~ internet ghost ~ , we developed a piece that leaned heavily into slow-burn tension. Rather than jumping straight into high-intensity horror, we intentionally paced the sequence to build intrigue. Using a combination of sourced footage and stock imagery, the visuals gradually evolve. From starting subtle and ambiguous, then layering in more unsettling elements as the audio swells, the approach mirrors the psychological pacing of effective horror, where anticipation often has more impact than immediate payoff.

The sound design played a critical role in reinforcing this progression. Each visual beat was carefully aligned with shifts in the music, allowing tension to accumulate in a way that feels cohesive rather than chaotic. The climax arrives with a sharp tonal shift and a glitched title card that lands in perfect sync with the final note of the track and Izzaezel’s logo. That moment acts as both a visual signature and a hard transition point, signaling to viewers that the experience is about to begin.

Beyond aesthetics, this intro served a functional purpose within the stream itself. It created a buffer between viewers joining the stream and the gameplay starting, giving late arrivals a moment to settle in while simultaneously rewarding early viewers with a curated experience. More importantly, it established a sense of consistency that regular viewers began to associate the intro with the start of something familiar and exciting, reinforcing brand identity over time.

While the increase in viewership was modest in raw numbers, the impact was meaningful within the context of a growing channel. Even a slight lift in viewer retention and concurrent view count can significantly affect visibility on Twitch’s discovery algorithm. More viewers staying through the intro meant stronger early engagement, which in turn helped the stream gain a bit more traction during those critical opening minutes.

Ultimately, the project succeeded in doing more than just “looking cool.” It helped shape the emotional entry point of the stream, built anticipation and contributed, albeit however incrementally, to audience growth. For a smaller creator, those incremental gains are everything, and this piece became a key part of making Fear Friday feel like an experience viewers wanted to return to week after week.
